Obviously this doesn't hold entirely true for all other genres, and long running series will build some expectations, but with simulators there will be enthusiasts and experts, who will be the primary audience for the game, who will know every detail of the subject inside and out, and for whom their enjoyment of the game will come directly from the level of accuracy employed within the game.

In more fantastical games, there is a greater degree of creative license and so consumers won't, to the same degree, enter the game with any sort of expectation regarding the game. Taking a bit of a punt here, but one of the factors that probably influences the level of quality in simulators like this, is the fact that they are very much based on real life. It's just relaxing to hit the road once in a while and play something beautiful (yes really) and simple. That being said, the ownership is a hook but not the driving force (hah!) behind playing the game. Now you're not just shipping to buy cosmetic parts, you're actually building a company.

Saving up for your first rig, taking on freight instead of one-off missions, and eventually starting your own shipping company with additional drivers really help the longevity of the game. So the driving is good, but the real hook for me was a feeling of ownership. That's always been strange to me that people complain a simulator has terrible crash physics stop playing the game wrong! If you play the game seriously, you also won't notice the lack of real physics for things like crashes since you won't be crashing that much.
